Enhancing the spiritual life of our parish

Serving at Mass and other liturgies is an important role because the server is assisting, not just the priest, but the whole worshiping community. Hence, altar servers are called to be aware of their role and their responsibility in performing it well.

Parish youth who have received the Sacrament of First Holy Communion are invited to become trained for being an altar server. Deacon Chet Zuck will provide the training.

Laity who assist the clergy in the distribution of Holy Communion during Mass, as well as to those who are home-bound or sick, are called Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (EMHC).

Our parish has produced a Guide for Extraordinary Ministers. All EMHC are invited to read and review this guide carefully. If you are interested in becoming an EMHC, you are also invited to view this guide.

At Sacred Heart, the roles of being a Greeter and Usher are combined. 

Greeters welcome parishioners and visitors to the Cathedral before Mass. These are the first faces our parishioners and visitors see when they enter the Cathedral for Mass. We hope to provide a welcoming, joyful entrance to our church through greeters who reach out to open doors and say, "Hello!" to all who enter. Greeters may also assist in the "October Count," a weekend in the fall where our parish "takes count" of the Mass attendees in an effort to measure our engagement and ministries from year-to-year.

Ushers assist the faithful before and during Mass, taking up the collection and distributing bulletins after Masses.

Lectors are readers, who proclaim the Word of God at liturgies. All new lectors will have a training session prior to being assigned.

Families in our parish are invited to volunteer as Offertory Families, who present gifts at the altar during Mass. Usually a family is asked by the ushers at each Mass.

Sacred Music is a vital component of the Holy Mass. Our parish has various choral groups who sing at Masses throughout the year. 

Cantor
Adults and youth who possess clarity and beauty of voice. Direct the active participation of the faithful’s singing of hymns and responses. Instruction and guidelines will be provided.

Choir
Accompany the singing of the faithful whenever sacred action is to be celebrated with song. Instruction and guidelines will be provided.

Instrumentalists
Qualified musicians with a firm musical foundation. Accompany the singing of the faithful and truly contribute to their edification using organ, piano, strings, guitars, and other approved instruments. Instruction and guidelines will be provided.

Lead the Rosary before each weekday and Sunday Mass.

Ensure a beautiful setting for our Eucharistic celebrations which appropriately reflects the liturgical season, including arranging flowers, hanging banners and other special décor and adornments. Training and instruction will be provided.

Make sure that the vestments and linens are regularly laundered. Training and instruction will be provided. Time and attention to detail will be required.
